Cricket fans witnessed history on Saturday as Namibia pulled off a sensational four-wicket victory over South Africa in their first-ever international encounter.

In a packed Namibia Cricket Ground — which made its grand debut as an international venue — the underdogs scripted an unforgettable chapter in African cricket.

Wicketkeeper Zane Green turned hero for Namibia with an unbeaten 30, guiding his team to glory when it mattered most.

With 11 runs needed off the final over, Green smashed a thunderous hook shot for six off Andile Simelane’s first ball — setting the tone for victory. He finished in style, cracking the final delivery to the midwicket boundary to seal the win.

“The guys did it with good skill,” said an emotional Gerhard Erasmus, Namibia’s captain, after leading his jubilant team on a victory lap before a roaring home crowd. “You can see what it means for the team and the fans.”

South Africa’s Struggles on a Slow Pitch

South Africa, fielding a second-string squad due to several stars — including captain Aiden Markram — being in Pakistan for a Test series, struggled to find rhythm on a sluggish surface.

Stand-in skipper Donovan Ferreira admitted, “We weren’t good enough.” Their campaign suffered a major blow when Gerald Coetzee walked off with a chest muscle injury after bowling just nine balls.

The Proteas’ innings never took off, with Quinton de Kock, returning to international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup, falling for just one run in the opening over.

Despite efforts from J. Smith (31 runs), South Africa managed only 134 for 8 in 20 overs, unable to capitalize on their experience.

Trumpelmann and Heingo Wreck South Africa’s Lineup

Former South African pacer Ruben Trumpelmann haunted his old side with a fiery spell, bagging 3 wickets for 28 runs, while young gun Max Heingo claimed two quick wickets that left South Africa reeling at 65 for five.

Namibia’s bowlers maintained tight control, forcing errors and keeping the pressure on throughout.

When the dust settled, Namibia confidently chased the target, reaching 138 for 6 in 20 overs — with Green’s composed innings sealing one of their most memorable victories ever.

Namibia Cricket Ground Marks Its Grand Inauguration

This match wasn’t just about a win — it was about a milestone. The game marked the inauguration of the new Namibia Cricket Ground, which will be one of the 2027 Cricket World Cup venues, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

It was a fitting start — a thrilling, emotional, and unforgettable night that will be remembered for generations.

    Brief Scorecard

    South Africa: 134/8 in 20 overs (J. Smith 31; R. Trumpelmann 3/28)
    Namibia: 138/6 in 20 overs (Z. Green 30*; M. Heingo 2 wickets)

This victory wasn’t just a triumph for Namibia — it was a statement. It proved that passion, determination, and teamwork can topple giants.

As the Namibian players celebrated under the floodlights, one thing became clear — a new era of African cricket has begun.
